Shift happens

I recently ran across the subject video on a site knows as gumbert.com. It is worth watching, at least for a while. It does not take long to get the point.

What that video tells us is that the future is not going to be predicted. I did not say that is was not predictable, but that we won't really get it except in hind sight. That is rather like looking back at 9/11/2001 and asking why "they" did not connect all the dots.

The current discussions withing the Green Party California are all about what is wrong with the way that the party is being administered. I would like to shift the discussion to what is right with the party now. I am sure that there are a number of things that we are doing right.

  • We were the first party to stand up for the impeachment of the current Chief Executive.
  • We have never expressed support for the war in Iraq.
  • We are beginning to gain seat at increasingly high levels of government and to retain many of the seats that we held in smaller communities. e.g. Richmond in addition to Sebastopol.
  • Green Party Members are leading the fight against GMO's all over the state.
I invite others to add to this list.

We are bringing the sort of vision the video points to but does not say directly. Many of the future concerns raised are raised every day by Greens who write and talk about the impact war debts will have on our future generations.

We are addressing the evil of wars, whether it's the war on Iraq, the war on terrorism, the war on drugs or even the war on poverty. By bringing together advocates for victims of the drug war with advocates for the victims of the war on Iraq, we fulfill one of our missions, to introduce people who should be allies to one another.
We are slowly, and organically, growing candidates, locals, and state chapters in number and skill.

None of this is enough, but look at all we have stacked against us. Personally, I think we need to give each other a break once in a while, and if you're not doing more than online complaining, please go find a corner to sit in and spend your time looking at belly button lint. The rest of us know how little time there may actually be left...

I agree with you. There is a lot to do and the good guys aren't winning.

However, the GPCA is in a unique position where the CC can spend 45 minutes to decide whether or not to add 5 minutes to an agenda item. And these are good people who want to make the party work... but only their way.

We're the only political party I know of actively distributing truly free non-commercial computer software. (well, my county anyway.) To people who understand the issues, it shows a commitment to free speech, workers' rights, the decentralized artisan craft economy, and even feminism.
